The Mudgee valley is a small wonderland of goodness if you know where to look. Below are some links to our friends and comrades doing amazing stuff throughout the Mudgee region:
Our favorite food producers:
Tinja Organics: organic dry aged beef and organic pork – Jane does the best dry-aged beef pie around.
Ormiston Free Range Pork: James and Georgie produce amazing pork – the whole pig, and nothing but the pig! They’ve just retreated to farm-gate sales recently so fort he best natural bacon in town, give them a call.
Gundooee Organic Waygu Beef: Yum yum YUM! And Rob Lennon is just gorgeous. Talk to him about his cows and you’ll see what we mean.
Green Mountain Olives: Award winning olive oil grown next door to Milkwood. Converting to organic practice as we start playing a larger role in our family’s farming operations…
SarJay: Sarah produces some very tasty carrots and a wide range of other veggies and eggs, without chemical inputs.
Broombee Organics: amazing stone fruit + olives.
‘Winona’ pasture cropped grains: as outlined in our post why pasture cropping is such a big deal.
Our favorite wine producers:
Martins Hill Wines: Michael and Janet make a gorgeous, organic, affordable, preservative free ‘Alfresco Red’ that goes with just about anything…
Thistle Hill Wines: great whites, yummy dessert wines. All organic.
Lowe Wines: biodynamic, organic, and big advocates of aerated compost tea and other innovative stuff. Great wine, too!
Botobalar: we love their low preservative organic chardonnay. Australia’s oldest organic vineyard.
Broombee Organic Wines: yummo.
Our favorite cafes:
Market Street Cafe: Aaron is nuts about sourcing local food and makes an exquisite sourdough.
Alley Cats: best coffee in town. Fair trade, house blend, and a stunning courtyard dripping with grapevines.
Outside the Square: 55a Mortimer Street Mudgee. Fair trade coffee, ethical crew, great food and super kid friendly.
Eltons: Best chips in town (when they have time to make their own) and some local ingredients.
Other Mudgee Goodness:
Wirudjuri People: this is the most comprehensive online resource we know of from the Mudgee area…
Mudgee Fine Foods: lots of info on various local food makers and producers
Watershed Landcare: Thea Ridley runs some excellent events and courses for locals, and is one knowledgeable lady
Scythes Australia: Our friends Nikki and Dan import beautiful Austrian scythes and know alot about alot.
Mudgee District Environment Group: an important node of info about the endless encroaching reach of coal mines and fracking in the wider region.
Mudgee Regional Tourism: a good starting point for visitors. Their info center in town is super helpful also.
