Upcoming Permaculture Design Certificate at Milkwood Farm

A quick shout-out that we’ve extended the earlybird price deadline for this darn fine course until Sunday night: Permaculture Design Certificate: 11-24 Nov 2012, Milkwood Farm

Milkwood PDC’s frequently produce motivated folks ready to take on and transform their communities. We place huge emphasis on ensuring excellent student outcomes and we see permaculture design skills as something that you’ll never stop learning, so we don’t pretend that this 2-week stint is all there is to it. But it sure is a hell of a start.

Our on-farm PDCs also prioritize people care and incredible farm-grown food to nourish body and soul throughout the 2 week intensive course. We have everyone from home-makers to bankers to teachers to international aid workers attend, and the consistent student feedback is that a Milkwood PDC enhances, affirms and motivates people’s existing knowledge and skillsets to go out there and be the change they want to see in this world.

A muster of market gardeners…

Just a few photos from the recent and awesome Market Garden Masterclass at Allsun Farm down in Gundaroo. It was so exciting to have 25 future market gardeners in the one space, all with so many skills and ambitions!

Joyce, Mike and the whole Allsun Farm crew packed us full of knowledge over three days of seeding, reading, listening, crop rotation planning, hoeing, soil blocking transplanting, broadforking and (of course) eating… Read More »

Seed Freedom: The Seed Savers in conversation with Costa

At the risk of creating a series of seedy posts, just thought I better mention the other Seed Freedom event we’re running: The Seed Savers in conversation with Costa, in Redfern on the evening of the 12th Oct.

I only put it up last night but it’s already 4/5 full. It’s heartening to know that seed saving floats so many people’s boats! It will be an amazing night so it you’re near Sydney, please rsvp and we’ll see you there.

A weekend of serious backyard veggies…

Last weekend Michael, Zag and Stephen packed the ute with seeds, mulch and tools, and went to Sydney to teach a Serious Backyard Veggies workshop with special guest Costa Georgiadis. Planting, planning what goes where and what goes in next, natural pest management and all the ‘how to grow great tomatoes/eggplant/celery/carrots etc’ tips that could be squeezed into 2 days…

It was pretty darn fun, with lots of students saying ‘this is all the stuff i needed to know but didn’t know I needed!’ And also had the consequence that the front of the Alexandria Park Community Garden is now packed with spring veggies. Check out the gorgeous photos Cathy Xiao Chen took… Read More »

Upcoming: Intro to Organic Market Gardening: 22-23 Sept

In just over a month we’ll be hosting an Intro to Organic Market Gardening course smack-bang in the middle of the Milkwood market garden. This will be 2 hands-on days of crop planning, garden design and as much planting, growing and harvesting knowledge as we can squeeze in.

This course is designed for people interested in the idea of running either a large-scale kitchen garden or small-scale market garden using deep organic techniques, and who want to figure out how to start their patch from scratch, just like we did at Milkwood Farm. If you’re keen and able, you can book in here

Intro to Organic Market Gardening at Milkwood Farm in September

In mid September we’ll be running an Intro to Market Gardening course which will be two days of hands-on skills in our very own market garden! This course is designed for folks with a little gardening experience, who want to skill up on how to grow a serious amount of vegetables.

At Milkwood Farm, we went from a patch of bare ground to two tonnes of organic produce in a season, and you can too!

This course would suit anyone who has a bit of growing knowledge, but who dreams of producing enough organic veggies to feed a number of families either in a community context or a small market garden enterprise.  Read More »

Upcoming Market Garden Masterclass at Allsun Farm

In early September we’ll be running a 3-day Market Garden Masterclass at the fabulous Allsun Farm in Gundaroo, which will be taught by Joyce Wilkie and Mike Plane, two long-time organic market gardeners (and our mentors for the Milkwood market garden).

This 3-day class is a chance for folks with good backyard (or larger scale) vegetable growing experience to learn the ins and outs of setting up a thriving organic market garden as an enterprise – whether that be a family enterprise, a community enterprise, or whatever else your situation needs. Aquaponics Workshops in Sydney: aiming to truly close the loop

Just a quick note that we’ve scheduled some spring Aquaponics Workshops in Sydney, which are 2 days of intensive aquaponics how-to and why-to with Charlie Bacon (Ecolicious) + Nick Ritar (Milkwood).

While the basics of Aquaponics can be quite simple, there’s a lot of ways to do it in a way that enhances growing conditions for both fish and plants while still adhering to permaculture principles, which ensures you don’t end up with an input-heavy system disguised as a closed-loop one. Which is the kind of knowledge that this workshop is all about… Read More »

Latest student urban permaculture designs

The latest batch of Milkwood permaculture design students are currently hard at it in Sydney, taking their Permaculture Design Certificate part-time with the fabulous Alexia Martinez. I thought I’d share some of their latest permaculture designs…

These designs are all the student’s first full permaculture design, undertaken using a place they know well as the site. This design exercise is all about working with what you’ve got, both good and bad. Bring on the shady patios, the hot brick walkways, and the unused verges. It’s all potential for abundance, with the help of good planning and design… Read More »
